![]() Though I must admit I have the great benefit over him of living in a world of relative peace. This is where my opinion differs from Ringeck’s however. When we skip class for the third time this month because we just can’t make the time, are we maybe sometimes just a little bit afraid of putting ourselves through hard work? When we find ourselves getting angry at being struck by an opponent, is it possible we’re just afraid of being outperformed? I think this can be especially true in a public environment like a tournament. There are other, less obvious reactions though, that I think many of us overlook in ourselves. This is a really obvious reaction to fear that I think any of us would recognize in another person. ![]() This seems like quite a simple thing to say, that if you’re fearful or timid you’ll fall apart under the stress of combat. In Christian Tosclair’s Ringeck translation it says: “…but if you fear easily, you should not learn the art of fencing, because a fragile discouraged heart, it does no good when it becomes struck by any art.” I’m trying to be very conscious of decisions I make and their motivations, it’s a little bit surprising how often fear is a factor. We talked about it on an early episode of the podcast but it’s a topic that’s been coming to mind a lot lately. To get straight to the point however, today I want to write about fear. I’m still not really sure I fully understand what a blog is or how one should be written (an odd area for ignorance I admit). I’m pretty sure this is going to be my first deliberate blog post here.
